In-memory size of Linux kernel?

I just installed a new version of MILO, allowing me to use the full
64 MB of RAM. Before, when I was running nothing but getties, daemons and
init, total memory usage was around 6 MB, which struck me as quite large
but not entirely unreasonable for an alpha-test, statically linked OS.
It is now 15 MB or so, which strikes me as unusually large, especially since
the only changes I've made are a new kernel (1.3.67), a new MILO (whatever
the most recent was as of Feb 27th at 2:00 am EST), and telling MILO I had
64 MB of RAM.
Also, when I give the -x option to 'ps', it seg-faults, dumps core
and dies. I have a 1.3.67 kernel, patched for the AXP. Is this a known
problem?
