I surely can't figure what's going on:
(a) on the machines in the office, the old xgal binary *always*
worked fine, and the one on the CD-ROM never worked well.
(b) The old xgal binary always worked fine before I upgraded to
Red Hat 2.1 (and that includes kernel 1.3.57 and newer).
(c) Recompiling xgal resulted in a binary that worked well at
least once or twice (I'm absolutely positively certain that I
invoked the new binary with ./xgal, i.e., no way it would have
picked up the old binary in /usr2/...).
(d) After several trials, the old binary in /usr2/... worked well
at least once out of about 5 attempts (this is with kernel 1.3.63).
I never was able to the the new binary to work again.
Really weird. And it doesn't seem to be soundrelated since -nosound
makes no difference at all. As far as I can tell, there are no other
background processes active. Well, I'll keep my eyes open.
