However, when I
leave the machine, turn the monitor off, come back, and turn the monitor back
on, it reboots. Judging by the keyboard LED's, it reboots the moment I hit
the power button on the monitor. I have a CTX 17" monitor, with the neat
power-saving features et cetera, but I still don't know how it could
force the machine to reboot.

and Jim Nance <Jim_Nance@avanticorp.com> advised:

1) Replace the power supply in your computer.
2) Plug the monitor into a different outlet than the computer
3) Check all your cords to make sure they are tightly plugged
in on both ends.

To which I add (on the rash assumption that Noah is somewhere in greater
Pittsburgh, PA, USA and not rlogin'ed from outside North America):

1.) Make sure that you have 3 wire cords for the monitor, computer,
and any other large devices involved (printers, scanners,
external disk cabinets, etc.), and that none of them have
been defeated - all three wires should be intact all the
way to the wall plug.

2.) That the cords are fairly thick - carefully inspect them to
see what size (AWG) the wires themselves are fairly thick;
maybe #16 or #14 if you can find them.

3.) Consider a humidifier, or at least try to determine what the
relative humidity is. It gets surprisingly dry in the snow-
belt this time of year (~20%).

I've been a ham radio operator for 26+ years, and just about every piece of
gear I've ever seen had 3 wire cords on them. But the vast majority of
consumer appliances, which are just as power-hungry and delicate, don't.
Most decent computer gear does, but sometimes they don't, or somehow the
grounding is defeated.

That's the easy stuff to check. I just noticed more advice pouring in, too !!
