taper starts too look like a real nice program. First time I tried it
didn't work at all for the Alpha. But I had some correspondence with
the author and he was very interested in making the program 64 bit
clean etc. As I understand it, many fixes have been incorporated into
taper-6.2 already. I haven't had time to try it recently, but you
might want to give it a shot. Though my guess would be that it's
still a little risky to use it for serious backups.
