Stranger and stranger. Reading the ifconfig source shows that it doesn't
always print the base address, and that my not seeing it isn't
necessarily a problem. OK. But what I _have_ noticed is definite clue
material: a flood ping to an eth0 host only increases eth0's TX packet
count by a couple, and doesn't touch its RX packet count. However the
*loopback* interface TX and RX counts go up by what I'd have expected to
see on eth0 (like, BIG numbers).
Now I'm confused :-)
