Troubles with X and S3

I am experimenting right now with RH 4.0 distribution on pc164 type
machine. It has S3 card (Number 9). I got X-windows running with a
pretty reasonable screen picture. The trouble is that 3.1.2 S3 server,
included in Red Hat distribution, produces tons of "unaligned access"
messages and is not beyond of a sudden and unpredictable exit from time
to time.

I tried the current 3.2 server from ftp.xfree86.org. This one totally
locks the machine. No video, no mouse, no keyboard. It is good that
a power switch still works. :-) Does anybody has any info/suggestions
in that area?
