Yes, it is supposed to. All that should be required is to put
password: files nis
in /etc/nsswitch.conf.
Unfortunately, I have never personally tested the NIS support
for the simple reason that I don't have access to an existing
NIS server. You may wish to contact the author of the glibc
nis support, kukuk@vt.uni-paderborn.de, directly on this.
