Yep, serial handling at the alphas seems to be a bit unreliable:
On my UDB, I had severe (seemingly dataflow) problems, which vanished
when I upgraded from RH 3.0.3 to RH 4.0, which is strange, as I've used
the same kernel 2.0.18 before and afterwards :(
