The glibc info pages are the best sources for this info AFAIK.
They're fairly comprehensive. On Red Hat, they are in
/usr/info/libc.info*. You can read it either from within emacs or
using the info program. E.g., "info /usr/info/libc.info" should get
you going ("i nsswitch" will bring you to the section on the NSS
configuration file).
