I had the same problem and the problem was fixed by doing something
a little different:
Put this in /etc/hosts.conf:
order hosts, bind
This is what I have in /etc/resolv.conf (hch.com is my bogus domain name):
search hch.com
nameserver 206.84.208.4
nameserver 208.84.208.3
Your local nameservers will of course differ.
> But you really need /etc/nsswitch.conf as mentioned earlier.
I agree along with everyone else on this.
Also make sure you have a 127.0.0.1 localhost loopback
in your /etc/hosts file.
