This sounds very much like the problem I had with my 166Mhz UDB machine. I
posted to this mailing list a few days ago describing the same symptoms as
you describe. I eventually tracked it down to a bad solder joint on the
SCSI connector on the internal (Toshiba 325Mb) SCSI drive. After
re-soldering this connector all is now well.
The same symptoms would show up for incorrect termination or a broken wire
in the internal SCSI cable. I had to eliminate both of these possibilities
before I knew what the problem was.
